SUMMARY OF CRASH:
On October 8, 2022, at approximately 1143 hours, Troopers with the Vermont State Police-Williston Barracks responded to a report of a multi-vehicle crash on the southbound side of I-89 just north of Exit 11 in the Town of Richmond.
Based upon witness statements and roadway evidence, Troopers determined that traffic on the interstate had begun to slow in order to merge, as the interstate was reduced to one lane due to an ongoing construction project in the area. Vehicle #1 was found to have had a mechanical failure with its brakes. As a result, the operator was unable to slow his vehicle for the traffic in front of him resulting in several vehicles in front of him being struck.
Several individuals involved in the collision were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for suspected minor injuries. The southbound side of the interstate was closed for approximately two hours while crews worked to clear debris from the roadway.
The Vermont State Police was assisted on scene by the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, Williston Police Department, Williston Fire & Rescue, Richmond Fire Department, Richmond Rescue, Bolton Fire Department, Essex Rescue, Rick’s Towing, and E & S Auto.
The Vermont State Police would like to remind the public that if they encounter stopped traffic on the interstate, the safest option is to remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt on. Additionally, it is against the law to operate against the flow of traffic or utilize U-turns on the interstate.
