I have represented clients in thousands of claims over the last four decades and it’s amazing to me the lack of understanding of the types of insurance coverage available for motor vehicles, homeowners, commercial policies and umbrella policies.
I know that they are teaching insurance coverage and driver’s education classes because it was part of my son’s curriculum when he took his driver’s ed class in 2012.
The minimum statutory requirements in Vermont do not provide much coverage. There is a minimum of $25,000 coverage for a liability policy and $50,000 for an uninsured motorist claim. There is any mandatory requirement for medical payments coverage even though it is cheap and is no-fault type insurance. It is also portable meeting that goes where you go. For example, if I was sitting on my porch in a car ran into the porch and I was injured, I would be covered under my med pay coverage. If I was riding my bicycle and was hit by a car, I would be covered under my motor vehicle med pay coverage. It also covers other passengers in your vehicle.
A state of Vermont survey found that rates charged by different insurance companies, for virtually the same coverage, varied by as much as 50%. Studies have shown that a majority of consumers don’t shop around buying or renewing an insurance policy. This suggests that many people aren’t taking advantage of a competitive market. I recommend that people shop with it least three different companies every time their policy is up for renewal. There can be advantages to paying more for insurance because a particular company is more reliable and is more likely to pay a claim when a motor vehicle accident occurs.
Is also important to make sure you are comparing policies accurately and that the coverage for the quotes that you’re obtaining is approximately the same.
When people call me about their auto accident claims one of the first things I ask about is the insurance coverage that they have because the insurance coverage from the negligent driver might be inadequate. There is nothing worse than telling somebody that they have insufficient coverage for the injuries they sustained in a car accident. Most people don’t know sometimes rely on the advice that they are given by an insurance agent who doesn’t necessarily know the types of coverage a particular individual needs.
